Many types of portable cord are identified by series of letters. SJO cable, SJT cable, and SOOW cable are just a few examples. But what you may not know is that these letters can tell you a lot about the cable. From weather resistance to materials, and even voltage rating, those letters deliver a lot of information about the appropriate uses for each type of portable cable.

Here are some of the most common letters used on portable cord, and their meanings:

S — Service, 600 volts
SJ — Junior Service, 300 volts
O — Oil-Resistant Outer Jacket
OO — Oil-Resistant Outer Jacket and Oil-Resistant Insulation
W — Weather and Water-Resistant
T — Thermoplastic
E – Elastomer
